Reliance Jio to team up with Google for exclusive budget 4G-VoLTE smartphone; is this Android One 3.0?

Reliance Jio to team up with Google for exclusive budget 4G-VoLTE smartphone; is this Android One 3.0?

Google's Reliance Jio Android One series budget 4G-VoLTE smartphone is expected to debut by the end of 2017.

Reliance Jio, which kicked up a huge storm in the Indian telecom sector late last year with its promotional offers, is reportedly working with search engine giant Google to make smartphones in India.
Mukesh Ambani-owned network carrier is initially planning to launch affordable 4G Google phone by the end of this year, Business Line reported citing industry sources.

Will Reliance Jio help Google Android One make a comeback in India?
Though there is no word on what Reliance Jio will call the new Google phone, many believe it will be christened Android One series. The argument is not completely unfounded as the search giant is keen on expanding the internet footprint in India.
The company has already joined hands with the central, state governments and the Indian Railways to offer free Wi-Fi at railway stations and landmark areas.
Phones with 4G capability hold a lot of potential in terms of internet speed and cost. Google launched the Android One series first in India in 2014. The search giant partnered with top local phone-makers Micromax, Spice Mobility and Karbonn Mobile, albeit with limited success. Later, Google joined hands with Lava International to launch the Pixel V1 in 2015, again in vain. Though, Google, in partnership with mobile vendors launched new Android One series phones in 2016 in select global markets, none came to India. This apparently led many to believe that Google have given up on the Indian market.

Now, the latest report indicates that the search engine is far from done with the subcontinent.
We believe Reliance Jio-branded Android One has more chances of becoming a hit among the public. How? You may ask. Well, Reliance Jio is currently the most, if not the best, cost-effective network carrier in the country. Jio is offering free calls to all networks across India with no roaming charges and the data tariff is the cheapest among all domestic players.
Android One failed to take off in India after emerging Chinese players Xiaomi, among others launched similar range of phones with more specs.
The success of Lyf series phones has put Jio in a position of advantage. A better understanding of consumers in the budget segment will give the partnership an edge in the making of Android One series.
This is a win-win situation for both the parties. While, Reliance Jio get a Google label to pull in the youth (urban and rural), the search engine giant will get more internet users, and in turn get huge returns on a long term basis.
"For Jio the main target is to expand its user base and tap into users who will migrate from featurephone to smartphone for first time. Google can be of great help as it can tweak the android according to requirements like the vernacular language support and integration of Jio ecosystem app's in Android OS. This will help Jio not only expand its penetration in India but also drive its content ecosystem. Moreover, the device will be from Google so it will have a high brand value. Google will also profit from this as they will have better control over the android OS (updates etc.) and add new users to its ecosystem," Parv Sharma, research associate at Counterpoint Research, said to International Business Times, India.
Besides the 4G-mobile, Google has also been asked to develop software for Reliance Jio's Smart TV services, which is expected to make its debut by the end of 2017.

Reliance Shares At 9-Year High After Mukesh Ambani Revamps Holding

RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani has announced plans to revamp his holding in the company.

Reliance Shares At 9-Year High After Mukesh Ambani Revamps Holding

Reliance Industries has added almost 18 percent since the day before its February 21 announcement that its telecommunication unit would begin charging for services from April.

Reliance Industries Ltd. shares traded near a nine-year high after Mukesh Ambani, India's richest man, announced plans to revamp his holding in the company valued at $22 billion.

Reliance shares rose as much as 4.1 percent to 1,287.80 rupees, the highest level since May 2008, and were at 1,265.55 rupees at 10:58 a.m. in Mumbai. It was the biggest gainer on the benchmark BSE S&P Sensex. The company has added almost 18 percent since the day before its Feb. 21 announcement that its telecommunication unit would begin charging for services from April.

The owners will transfer Reliance's shares held in 15 entities to eight firms, the company said in an exchange filing on Thursday, without giving details. The eight entities will acquire as many as 1.2 billion shares through a transfer on exchanges as early as March 9, according to the filing. The shares are valued at about 1.5 trillion rupees ($22 billion) as of Thursday's closing price of 1,236.75 rupees.

The selling firms will each retain at least 100 shares of Reliance, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Reliance, India's second-largest company by market value, runs businesses ranging from oil refining to retail and telecom. The company has spent more than $25 billion on its fourth-generation wireless data network. Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. started services in September.

The transaction is exempt from rules under India's takeover code and the purchasers won't have to make an offer to minority shareholders, according to the filing. The eight companies will acquire the shares at the market price prevailing on the date of transaction, according to the filing. However the price will not exceed 25 percent of 1,100.78 rupees a share, which is the weighted average market price in the last 60 trading days.

Reliance Jio's Big Plan: Capture More Than Half Of The Market

Reliance Industries chairman had earlier said that Jio has amassed 10 crore customers.

Reliance Jio's Big Plan: Capture More Than Half Of The Market

Reliance Jio expects the Indian telecom market to expand from Rs. 2 lakh crore to Rs. 3 lakh crore by 2020-2021, of which data would constitute a major portion.

Since its entry in September, Reliance Jio has taken the market by storm through its aggressive offerings. The intense competition could lead to consolidation in the sector, say analysts. Though Reliance Jio will start to charge customers from April 1, it has announced a slew of aggressive prepaid and postpaid plans. Jio held a meet with analysts to share its future plans and outlook for the sector. In a presentation to analysts, Reliance Jio said it is "well positioned to achieve more than 50 per cent revenue market share. Jio anticipates EBITDA or operating margin of more than 50 per cent, it added. Brokerage firm Religare has come out with a note on key takeaways from Jio's analyst presentation. Here are the highlights from Religare's note.

Data capacity: Jio believes data capacity would be the key driver for revenue market share, and that the company is targeting 50 per cent revenue market share with EBITDA margins (operating margins) in excess of 50 per cent. About 60 per cent of Jio's sites have fiberised backhaul portions, giving it a 3-4 year head start over competition.

Market size: Reliance Jio expects the Indian telecom market to expand from Rs. 2 lakh crore to Rs. 3 lakh crore by 2020-2021, of which data would constitute a major portion. Jio currently carries 1 billion GB/month of data traffic, and believes the Indian market has the potential to carry 5-6 billion GB/month of data traffic over the next 4-5 years.

Digital services line-up: Jio showcased an impressive line-up of current digital services (online TV, cinema, music and payments) and a few upcoming ones such as the 'connected car'. Based on the company's research, 400 million subscribers have the potential to spend Rs. 500 on digital services.

Handset prices: Jio believes handset prices are a good proxy to potential ARPUs (average revenue per user). The company indicated that the average handset price on its network is more than Rs. 10,000 and it enjoys a 40 per cent market share in handsets priced above Rs. 20,000.

ARPU (average revenue per user) focus: Jio sees significant elasticity in data (greater than voice) due to limited supply. The company intends to offer high-speed data access to customers while keeping overall pricing ARPU-oriented. RJio pointed that the current smartphone ARPUs (adjusted) for the industry hover around Rs. 329.

Religare View: Religare analysts Rumit Dugar and Saumya Shrivastava believe the market could remain competitive for an extended period considering Jio's aggressive revenue market share expectations. "While telecom stocks have seen a sharp rally owing to potential consolidation in the sector, we think that price competition would remain intense and earnings recovery would hinge on data-led recovery in industry growth," they said.
