Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Review by NDTV Gadgets360 ndtv | MI Note 5 Pro Price in India

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Review

Many Android flagships in 2017 boasted of taller screens with nearly no borders as their headlining feature. Naturally, we started seeing this trend trickle down to the mid-range and entry-level segments, with phones like the InFocus Vision 3 (Review) and Honor 9 Lite (Review) to name a few. Xiaomi has been a favourite in the budget space and now it's joining the party.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (Review) has been the ranked as the top selling smartphone in 2017, so expectations for the Chinese manufacturer’s brand new offerings for 2018 are incredibly high. The new Redmi Note 5 (Review) has big shoes to fill and from what we’ve seen, it manages to do so pretty well. Xiaomi has also launched a more powerful model with a better camera, and it's called the Redmi Note 5 Pro. This is the first phone to debut Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 636 mobile platform, which supports full-HD+ displays and features Qualcomm's own custom Kryo CPU cores. While all of this sounds great on paper, the big question is whether it’s worth the premium over the standard Redmi Note 5. Let’s find out.

Must Watch

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro design and build

From the front, the Redmi Note 5 Pro looks very similar to the Redmi Note 5, with the same prominent curved corners on the 18:9 display. The phone still has visible borders to the left and right of the display and comparatively thicker ones at the top and bottom. It does feel slightly heavy at 181g, which could be due to the metal back and large battery. The white and gold trim of our review unit looked good, but you can also get this phone in black, blue, or rose gold.

The 5.99-inch display has a full-HD+ resolution, which is wider than what standard full-HD displays offer. Xiaomi boasts of it having a maximum brightness of 450 nits, which means that in the real world, the display is easily legible even under direct sunlight. Gorilla Glass has been used for scratch protection. There aren’t any capacitive buttons here since Xiaomi has gone with on-screen navigation buttons. Above the screen, we have the front facing camera, a diffused selfie flash, the earpiece, and sensors.

The volume and power buttons are on the right of the phone, and are slightly out of reach when you’re holding the phone normally, but feel solid. Up top, there's an IR emitter just like on previous Redmi Note smartphones. At the bottom of the phone, we have a 3.5mm headphone socket, microphone, Micro-USB port, and a speaker grille. Once again, It’s a bit disappointing to not have a Type-C port. Considering that this is the ‘Pro’ model, we would have appreciated the newer connector. On the left, we have a hybrid dual-SIM slot which can accommodate two Nano-SIMs or a microSD card (up to 128GB) in the second slot.

The metal back reminds us a lot of the Redmi Note 4, with its matte finish and slightly tapering edges. The fingerprint sensor lines up comfortably against your finger when you hold the phone, and authentication is quick. The camera bump is very noticeable, and let’s face it, its design has been, shall we say, "heavily inspired" by the iPhone X (Review). Even the arrangement is the same, with the two camera sensors flanking the dual-LED flash. The bump also means that this phone rests at an awkward angle when you place it on a flat surface. The back is otherwise plain, save for a printed Mi logo towards the bottom.

We received our test unit without any packaging but Xiaomi told us that buyers can expect a bundle similar to that of the Redmi Note 5, including the standard charger and silicone case.

The phone is pretty tall, which makes it a challenge to fit snugly into the pockets of some pants, but that isn't much of an issue otherwise. On the other hand, the width is manageable, making this phone easy to grip with one hand. We also got used to the slightly heavier weight after a couple days of using it. Overall, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is built well and looks good.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro specifications and features

Xiaomi is hailing the Redmi Note 5 Pro as the spiritual successor to the Redmi Note 3 (Review), which is true from a performance standpoint. The Redmi Note 3 raised the bar for performance at the Rs. 15,000 price level, and the Redmi Note 5 raises it once again. This is the first phone to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636 mobile platform, which was announced last October. This is only the second SoC outside the Qualcomm's flagship 800 series to feature the company's own custom Kryo CPU cores. We have a total of eight Kryo 260 cores which can run at a maximum clock speed of 1.8GHz and are split into two clusters of four ‘performance’ cores and four ‘efficiency’ cores. Just like the Snapdragon 630 SoC on the Moto X4 (Review), this one is fabricated using the smaller 14nm process, but with a slightly faster Adreno 509 GPU.

Qualcomm says this new GPU should offer better gaming performance compared to the Adreno 508 in the Snapdragon 630. Our review unit came running a beta build of Xiaomi's MIUI software, on which most benchmarks didn't run, in order to prevent leaks before launch. However, we did manage to run AnTuTu, which gave us a score of 85,838 points, and PCMark Work 2.0, which gave us a score of 5,619. This is a performance jump of around 10 precent on average compared to the Snapdragon 625 SoC used by the Redmi Note 5.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro is available with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM, although the storage remains the same at 64GB in both variants. You can expand by up to 128GB this using a miroSD card. The phone also has Bluetooth 5, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, GPS, FM radio, USB-OTG, and an array of sensors including a gyroscope. 4G is supported with VoLTE.

This phone's MIUI software is still based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat, which is a bit disappointing to see and we don't have any official word on when we can expect an Oreo update as of now. The Android security level is also not up to date -  our unit was patched till December 2017, though this could also be due to it being a beta build so we'll give Xiaomi the benefit of the doubt.

The custom skin is similar to what we’ve seen on other recent Xiaomi offerings such as the Redmi 5A (Review) and Redmi Y1 (Review). The custom icon set looks polished and we like the use of pastel shades. The interface looks slick and swiping through home screens is smooth. We didn’t encounter any noticeable lag or stutter in the animations either. The leftmost home screen is dedicated to giving you card-style updates, shortcuts for apps (you can add your own too), a space to take quick notes, cricket scores, and calendar events. There's also integration with Ola which lets you tap shortcuts for your Home and Work locations, although you're redirected to the Ola app (or a Web page if you don't have it installed) to actually make bookings.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro also has a bunch of pre-installed apps from Xiaomi. Mi Drop lets you send files over an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network provided the receiver also has the app installed. There’s also Mi Store and Mi Community, which can be uninstalled if not wanted.

The Settings app has a submenu for Wi-Fi calling, but there were no options to set, only a message that the feature depends on the cellular network provider. You can change the UI theme, use the fingerprint sensor to lock apps or take pictures, and set shortcuts for launching the flashlight, camera, etc. There are also familiar MIUI features such as Quick Ball, which is like Apple’s AssistiveTouch shortcut panel; one-handed mode; and Dual Apps, which lets you create two instances of some apps so that you can use them with multiple accounts.

The Fullscreen Mode menu lets you force apps to run full-screen (minus black bars on the sides), and you can set the navigation bar to auto-hide for a more immersive experience. You can also optionally sign up for a Mi Cloud account, which gives you 5GB of free cloud storage for backing up your contacts, messages, calendars, notes, etc.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro performance, camera and battery life

We tested the 4GB RAM variant of the Redmi Note 5 Pro, which performed very well with day-to-day usage. The screen does attract some fingerprints but we found the rest of the body to be quite resilient to smudges and dirt. Call reception is good and the speaker is loud enough for alerts and some media playback. The phone also runs pretty cool, and even with gaming, it only gets a bit warm. Heavy camera usage doesn’t make it overheat, which is very good.

For media playback, Xiaomi offers its own music and video app, which is frankly not needed when you have Google’s suite of media players preinstalled, and more feature-rich options such as MX Player available for free. High-bitrate videos played just fine, and this phone can even handle 4K playback. There’s a system-wide audio enhancement feature for headphones, which can be activated from the Settings app. Audio quality through headphones is good, and you can toggle between presets tuned to Xiaomi's various headphones, or set your own.

Xiaomi says the cameras are one of the big highlights of the Redmi Note 5 Pro, and in our experience, they were pretty good. At the back of the phone, there's a primary 12-megapixel camera with 1.25 micron pixels on its sensor and a f/2.2 aperture, while the second 5-megapixel camera is only used for sensing depth for the Portrait Mode effect. This works decently well for human subjects but the edge detection isn’t always accurate for other objects.

Landscapes shot in daylight have good detail, with very good colours. The phone struggles to get the white balance right at times under harsh sunlight, but otherwise, light metering is handled well. Edges in close-ups aren't very sharp but this is only noticeable when zoomed in at 100 percent. Sadly, HDR doesn’t kick in automatically (it does so with the front camera) so you’ll have to remember to engage it manually. In low light, autofocus gets a bit slower and shutter lag does creep in, but image quality doesn’t degrade too badly. Landscapes have a decent level of detail and noise is kept within bounds, and in macros, colours are well represented. Portrait Mode also works well in low light.

Since we tested this phone with beta firmware, the option for 4K video recording wasn't shown. We did check with Xiaomi about this and the company said that 4K video recording is meant to be supported, but an update might not be released by the time this phone goes on sale. Still, 1080p video recorded under good light is impressive. You can enable electronic stabilisation, which causes minor ‘shimmering’ anomalies in the output but this is something that might be fixed with future updates. The stabilisation itself works very well, even when you’re moving about.

However, continuous autofocus wasn't very effective when recording video. When switched off, autofocus was more on point. There are also slow-motion and time-lapse video modes, which work well enough. The Short Video shooting mode records a 10-second video clip but the audio quality is quite poor. Panorama mode also works well and is quick in stitching frames together. Manual mode offers limited functionality as it only lets you change the white balance and ISO.

Selfie shot on Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro using Depth Mode (tap for full-sized sample)

The front 20-megapixel sensor captures detailed selfies in daylight, although HDR isn’t too effective under strong sunlight. There’s a Depth Mode which uses Xiaomi’s AI learning algorithms for edge detection. In practice, it works quite well. It managed to blur out most of the background of our test shots (with a few misses here and there). There’s a selfie light, which fires diffused white light on your face, helping in very low light. Beautification can be turned on if needed, and you can choose the level of the effect and also modify some of your facial features.

The 4000mAh battery in the Redmi Note 5 Pro easily lasted us through more than a day of medium to heavy usage. The bundled 10W charger doesn’t support quick charging but the phone itself does. We tried it with our own Qualcomm Quick Charge power adapter and a notification on the lock screen indicated that the phone was charging quickly. The charging icon in the status bar also changed to the Quick Charge logo.

Verdict
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro offers plenty of reasons to spend that extra bit of money over the Redmi Note 5. The list of improvements includes a better set of cameras, slightly better battery life, and a more powerful processor - all of which make the usage experience just a bit nicer. The weight of the phone is something you will have to get used to, and even though it isn’t very striking to look at, the build quality is solid. We love the new taller display, which is sharp and has very good sunlight legibility.

Portrait mode works very well for the front and rear cameras, and this is backed by solid battery life and very good overall app and system performance. Given that this is a ‘Pro’ model, we would have liked to see more features, such as a bundled fast charger, USB Type-C port, and maybe a more distinctive design which would have set this phone apart from the non-Pro model. Having Android Oreo out-of-the-box would have also been a nice touch for enthusiasts, who Xiaomi is targeting here.

At a starting price of Rs. 13,999, this phone is pretty hard to beat. You have Xiaomi’s own Mi A1 (Review) at the same price, which is also a good pick especially if you’re looking for stock Android interface like on the Google Pixel series. The Moto G5S Plus (Review) has long been one of our top picks at this price point, but now, there’s really no matching the Redmi Note 5 Pro in terms of performance and features at this price.

iPhone X First Impressions | iPhone 10 First Look

In January 2007, Steve Jobs unveiled the original iPhone and the mobile and personal computing industries were never the same again. Ten years later - at a building named after the late Apple co-founder - his successor Tim Cook took the stage to introduce the iPhone X, the phone that he and Apple believe will define the roadmap of the smartphone industry for the next 10 years.

The iPhone X - pronounced iPhone 10 - represents the most radical change to Apple’s design language in the iPhone’s ten year history, as almost the entire face of the phone is now dominated by the display. Save for a small ‘notch’ at the top of the front edge - more on that later - the iPhone X has pretty thin bezels on all sides, though you wouldn't call it 'bezel-less'. This means that the newest, most-expensive iPhone-ever looks nothing like its predecessors, though the overall design is pretty similar to what we’ve seen on a few Android phones, both with and without that notch.

In a body that’s smaller than the iPhone 7 Plus, Apple has packed a display which at 5.8-inches is its largest yet on a smartphone. Belatedly, Apple has caught up with the Android manufacturers when it comes to having a screen-to-body ratio that’s befitting a smartphone shipping in 2017. That’s not all - another piece of tech seen hitherto in smartphones by the likes of Samsung (and others) now makes its iPhone-debut.

OLED panels are seen on Apple-made phone for the first time, ensuring that the all-display front of the iPhone X really catches your eye. At the launch event, Apple said it believes OLED technology is finally at a place where it is able to offer brightness levels, wide colour support, and colour accuracy that the company desires. The ‘Super Retina’ display on the iPhone X ticks all the right boxes when it comes to specifications: 1125x2436 pixels, 458ppi screen, Dolby Vision, HDR10, True Tone, and a one million-to-one contrast ratio. In terms of performance, the iPhone X display is as good as we’ve seen on any smartphone.

The price you pay for this all-display front is with the loss of the iconic home button and the embedded Touch ID sensor, which have been central to the way we interact with our iPhones since their respective introductions. Instead, you get Face ID, which is enabled thanks to an array of sensors in that notch we talked about earlier. Thanks to a Dot Projector, an Infrared Camera, and a Flood Illuminator, the iPhone X is able to build a 3D model of your face, even in the dark. Apple says this means Face ID cannot be fooled using your picture, or even a face mask that would trick most humans.

Though we didn’t get to test Face ID using our own face at the hands-on area at the Steve Jobs Theater on Tuesday, based on the demos we saw after the event, this first-generation unlocking technique is definitely slower than Touch ID, which is hardly a surprise. A fairer comparison would perhaps be with face-unlocking implementations of other OEMs, and Face ID seems to ace that test. More when we put the iPhone X through the paces during our review though.

A fun new iPhone X feature that the TrueDepth camera system enables is called Animoji. This lets you send messages where emojis can take your face and voice. While fun, it will be interesting to see if Animojis continue to be used once the novelty wears off. There are other software touches that are different about the iPhone X - you swipe up from the bottom edge to mimic the functionality of the home button; swipe and briefly hold to bring up the multi-tasking view; and slide down from the right of the notch to bring the Control Center into view.

As you would expect, the iPhone X comes with a bunch of other enhancements: improved cameras with Quad-LED True Tone flash on the rear, the A11 Bionic SoC that’s the fastest-ever smartphone chip on paper, stereo speakers, water and dust resistance, wireless charging, and a whole lot more that we will test in detail over the next few days. Stay tuned to Gadgets 360 for a review of the iPhone X.

Micromax Canvas 5 Lite is an Android smartphone that has many outstanding features such as 2 GB RAM, 5-inch Display, 4G support etc. at very affordable price of just Rs 6,499.

Interesting Features of Micromax Canvas 5 Lite

Micromax Canvas 5 Lite is not just an affordable 4G smartphone but also comes with many outstanding features that any smartphone lover would appreciate.

  • 5-Inches of IPS Touch Screen. At such a low price, the Micromax Canvas 5 Lite smartphone comes with the large IPS display of 5-inch in size. The display has HD 720×1280 pixels of resolution.
  • Quad Core Processor & Android OS. The Micromax Canvas 5 Lite is powered by 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735P processor and Android 5.1 operating system.
  • 2 GB of RAM & 16 GB Storage. RAM plays a vital role in any smartphone and mostly the smartphones around 2 GB RAM are priced around 15,000 to 20,000. But, Canvas 5 Lite smartphone with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB internal storage is priced at Rs. 6,499 only.
  • 8 MegaPixels of Camera With Flash. Along with the large screen, high RAM and Quad Core processor, Micromax Canvas 5 Lite smartphone comes with 5 MP of front and 8 MP rear camera, which is really satisfactory in such price.

That’s all about the important features of the smartphone. Well, now it’s extremely clear with the outstanding features of the phone that it’s most affordable 4G smartphone with such great features such as 2 GB RAM, powerful processor, large screen etc.
What are the Bad Points of the Phone?

However, the low cost and amazing features of the smartphone making it special among crowd but there always some downsides of every product launching in the market.

So, the bad points of the Micromax Canvas 5 Lite smartphone are following:

  • Non-Expandable Memory. As told above the smartphone comes with 16 GB of internal storage but the bad thing is that it cannot be extended with microSD card.

  • Non-Removable Battery. However, in the price of Rs 6,499, the 2000 mAh battery is great but problem with the battery here is that it isn’t removable. It’s not a big problem though, but according to me most Indians like to use a smartphone with removable battery.

That’s all about this 4G smartphone of Micromax. I hope this short review will be enough to help you decide whether to buy the phone or not. According to me, it’s a worth buying smartphone with such amazing features at very affordable pricing, specially for those who’re looking for a cheapest 4G smartphone with great features.

Huawei Mate 10 Teaser Confirms Leica-Branded Dual Rear Cameras, October 16 Launch

HIGHLIGHTS

  1. The Mate 10 will feature Leica-branded dual rear cameras
  2. It will be unveiled on October 16
  3. It is rumored to sport a bezel-less display

Huawei Mate 10 : After releasing a teaser video earlier this week of the upcoming Mate 10 smartphone, Huawei on Wednesday posted a new teaser photo of the next flagship that will join the company's lineup of Leica-branded dual camera smartphones. The Mate 10 can be seen alongside the P9, Mate 9, and P10 smartphones, all of which come with dual rear cameras. The teaser also confirms that the Mate 10 will be unveiled on on October 16.

The teaser photo not only confirms that the Mate 10 will sport Leica-branded lenses, but also shows the exact placement of the dual camera setup on the back. Much like the Mate 9, the upcoming Mate 10 will have a vertical setup on the back near the centre. As far as the cameras go, a video teaser posted earlier this week showed images captured by the Mate 10's rear camera highlighting colour contrasts, Bokeh effects, among other things. It also seemed confirm a a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor and a 12-megapixel RGB sensor setup, similar to last year's Mate 9 and P9 smartphones.

Another noteworthy aspect of the teaser is the tagline associated with the Mate 10 - #beyondthegalaxy - which can be seen as a dig on Samsung's recent flagships. Huawei has already teased that the Mate 10 will sport a bezel-less display that it terms as 'EntireView' display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, pitting it against the LG G6, Samsung Galaxy S8, and the upcoming iPhone 8. In fact, Huawei CEO expressed last month that the Mate 10, which is tipped to sport facial recognition, support AR and 3D sensing, will directly compete against Apple's upcoming tenth anniversary iPhone.

The Huawei Mate 10 has also been rumoured to to come with an iris scanning feature, and is expected to be powered by Huawei's anticipated HiSilcon Kirin 970 SoC, which will be based on the 10nm fabrication process. It is expected to sport a 6-inch 1080x2160 pixels display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. Huawei will likely tease more features of the Mate 10 as we approach the October 16 launch. The smartphone is expected to be priced around CNY 4,000 (roughly Rs. 38,500).

Apple's iPhone 8 expected to be launched in second week of September 2017

Apple’s latest offering iPhone 8 is expected to bring in significant improvements and breakthrough features including an OLED bezel-less panel, no home button and a vertical dual camera setup with AR capabilities

Moneycontrol News | UC Trending News

The new information has been shared by the French website Mac4Ever, which claims it confirmed the news from a few French telecom companies.

Apple will likely host its iPhone 8 event on September 12.

While nothing as yet official from Apple’s end, if this turns out to be true Apple will be starting to roll out the pre-booking orders from September 15 itself, with the phones expected to be made available by September 22, in sync with the Cupertino company’s traditional sales pattern.

The iPhone 8 will be Apple’s 10th Anniversary smartphone and looks set to be the first one to debut with a wireless charging tech, a curved AMOLED display and an unusual vertical dual-rear facing camera.

A report in Forbes said that the iPhone 8 may be the most expensive one so far, and may come at a price hovering around USD 1200.

Apple is likely to retire its Touch ID fingerprint scanner from the iPhone 8.

The phone may also feature a 3D camera that will unlock the device with facial recognition, with the unlocking time of the phone to be a millionth of a second.

As per a report in The Inquirer, here are the rumoured specs-

A Chinese tipster Geekbar claims that the iPhone 8 will come out in 64 GB, 256 GB options. The base variant of the phone will be seeing double storage from last year, which offered 32 GB at the starting point.

A reason behind the higher base storage could be the iPhone 8's expected AR and 3D sensing features.

A previous report claimed that the iPhone 8 supply chain may have limited editions for sale at first, with around 2 to 4 million supply this quarter, as per predictions from Apple Insider. However, the production is expected to ramp up quickly to 45 million and 50 million this year itself.

JioPhone India Ka Smart Phone Booking 24 August 2017 On 5:30pm | Vistit WWW.JIO.COM | Jiophone Delivery Date

JioPhone Handset Booking

Visit WWW.JIO.COM

JioPhone Pre-booking can be done against an amount of Rs. 500, which will be adjusted against the fully refundable, one-time, security deposit at the time of delivery.

Mumbai : Reliance Industries is bracing for an initial demand supply mismatch, senior executives at the company with knowledge of the matter said, as it starts pre-booking of its much-anticipated 4G feature phone from Thursday evening, with an initial deposit of Rs 500 apiece.

The Mukesh Ambani-owned company is training hundreds of sales people, its own and those from largeformat retail chains such as The Mobile Store and Sangeetha Mobiles, for educating consumers on booking the JioPhone.

“Our sales people will begin taking prebookings of the JioPhone for Rs 500 and will begin giving the phones when they arrive in September for an additional Rs 1,000,” said Subhash Chandra, the managing director of Sangeetha Mobiles.

Reliance Industries plans to gradually ramp up supply and aims to eventually have 5 million of the JioPhone available on retail channels every week. The mass market 4G phone being offered effectively free — the company takes a three year, interest-free refundable deposit of Rs 1,500 — is key to new telecom operator Reliance Jio's bid to quickly scale up its nearly 125 million user base by targeting the 500 million feature phone users.

Jio has been messaging its customers about the JioPhone and how to do the pre-booking. Retail chains on their own have also begun informing customers about the availability of the device, said another executive aware of the details of the plans.

The phone will be distributed on a first-come-first-served basis through Jio retailers, multi-brand device retailers and the network of Reliance Digital stores.

According to Reliance Digital store executives, if the JioPhone is pre-booked through the Reliance Industries retail unit, it should be collected from the specific Reliance store whose code would be SMSed to the customer.

Some retailers said Reliance was ensuring that the initial stock would go its own Reliance Digital stores to attract footfalls and consumer interest and that other retailers would get stock later on.

Retailers will have to upgrade their Jio point-of-sale machines with a new software which will support issuing of the pre-booking vouchers and payment through BHIM, Jio Money, Paytm and net banking. Each retailer would be able to issue only 40 vouchers in the first lot. The phones will be imported initially, but the company plans to make them in India by the year-end. Reliance Jio didn't respond to emailed queries.

In this case, the SMS will be sent to you as well as your friend’s mobile number, with the address of the retailer and booking ID.

Jio Phone price and delivery date

As mentioned above, the phone is free to buy but you will have to make a Rs. 1,500 refundable security deposit “to avoid potential misuse.” Gadgets 360 understands the payment will be made in two parts – Rs. 500 is to be paid when you make the booking, while the remaining Rs. 1,000 needs to be paid while picking up the handset.

Delivery dates for JioPhone will depend upon how early you book the device, as Reliance Jio is following the first-come, first-serve rule. So if you want to be among the first to get your hands on the device, make sure to be ready with the details when pre-orders open at 5pm on Wednesday. The company aims to deliver 5 million units of the handset each week, but the demand expected to be high so there is no surety on when the deliveries would be made.

Lenovo K8 Note Review | Technical Guruji | Gadgets360 | Ndtv Gadgets | Lenovo Phones

7.5/10 Rating
he K8 Note is a very exciting smartphone -- it is not only Lenovo Mobile's first big launch in India in quite a long time, it is also the first phone from the company's stable to ditch the slow and heavy Vibe UI in favour of stock Android.
Along with the pure build of Android, the smartphone comes with relatively top-of-the-line internals, a premium all-metal design, a dual-camera setup at the rear and some nifty features like Dolby ATMOS and splash resistance. All that for just Rs 12,999. On paper that sound pretty enticing.
But does the K8 Note have what it takes to stand tall against some seriously heavyweight competition like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Moto G5 Plus and the Nokia 6? On paper, Lenovo has checked all the right boxes but does that translate to a superlative user experience? Are the dual cameras worth it or just a gimmick? Let's find out.

Classy, albeit a bit generic design

The Lenovo K8 note is crafted entirely out of series 5000 aluminum and looks quite sleek and premium, especially in the sublime Venom Black colour, which comes with a matte finish at the back. Unlike in the Moto G5 Plus and many other handsets in this price range, there is no trace of plastic to be found on the K8 Note.
While the design will not win any awards for originality and looks a tad generic from certain angles, it is quite elegant and classy. There are no gaudy finishes to be found here -- everything is very tastefully done.  What might put some people off though is the fact that the smartphone is a bit too wide, which along with the substantial top and bottom bezels make it a bit cumbersome to use with one hand.
The all-glass front is covered by 2.5D Gorilla Glass which enhances the in-hand feel and also protects against nicks and scratches. At the rear, the overall look is very clean with a subtle Lenovo logo in the lower half of the back panel and a vertically mounted dual camera setup and fingerprint sensor at the top.
The smartphone comes with three separate slots for your microSD card and two SIM cards -- no Hybrid SIM funny business going on here. The K8 Note also comes with a dedicated Music Key on the right edge which can be used to control music playback as well as reconfigured to turn on the flashlight or open any third party application.
The Lenovo K8 note is crafted entirely out of aluminum and looks quite sleek and premium, especially in the sublime Venom Black colour
While brownie points must be given to Lenovo for not going the Samsung way and making the key locked to a specific function (Bixby button), the implementation of the Music Key is a bit lacking. Currently, the key does absolutely nothing at all on a single press. You have to long press it to play/pause (which can also be reconfigured ), double click it to skip a track and triple click it to go to the previous track. The ideal implementation would have been -- single press to play/pause and leave long press as a customisable function. This is something obviously done with software so chances are that Lenovo may fix it in future, depending on user feedback.
All in all, in a day and age of smartphones sporting loud and over the top designs in a bid to stand out from the crowd, the K8 Note looks suave and classy, especially in the Venom Black color.

Adequate display for the price

The Lenovo K8 Note comes with a 5.5-inch fullHD IPS LCD display, which is fairly decent for the price. The colours are nice and punchy, viewing angles are on point and it's nice to see Lenovo not skimp out and equip the K8 Note with a 720p panel.
Even though Lenovo claims the display has 450 Nits of brightness, I found the maximum brightness lacking. As a result, the sunlight legibility of the display too is not that great. During indoor use, however, the screen is fairly good.
Lenovo K8 Note Photos

As the K8 Note is a multimedia focused smartphone, it comes with a few tricks up its sleeve like Dolby ATMOS (available only with wired headphones) and Theatre MAX 2.0. While Dolby ATMOS does provide a nice surround sound effect, audio purists may find it a tad artificial and synthetic. Theatre MAX 2.0 is actually pretty cool -- it basically splits the screen into two halves and makes it look like you are watching content on a large theatre like screen (when viewed through a VR headset).

Fast stock Android but with some bugs

The most talked about feature of the Lenovo K8 Note is the fact that the smartphone runs a near stock build of Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box. After years of equipping their smartphones with a heavily skinned and bloat-ridden version of Android in the form of Vibe UI, this is a refreshing and much needed change from Lenovo.
In day to day use, the K8 Note feels like someone has crammed Motorola's software inside a Lenovo smartphone, which is not that surprising given the fact that Lenovo and Moto brands are owned by same company. Apart from Moto's suite of applications and their trademark gestures like karate chop to turn on the flashlight, the software on the K8 Note is exactly the same as that you will find on a current generation Motorola smartphone. Even Moto's custom icons and their trademark clock widget are present on the K8 Note.
Stock Android does make a difference in day to day to use. Paired with the fairly powerful internals, the smartphone is zippy and strums along nicely without any major lags and slowdowns. It is surely  an improvement over Vibe UI and a step in the right direction for Lenovo.
However, I did witness some bugs and app crashes throughout my 8-plus days of usage. Bugs included the Wi-Fi getting disconnected arbitrarily, the settings pane freezing up and so on.
Also, in a move very uncharacteristic of stock Android -- Lenovo has bundled an app called Protect which keeps on sending annoying notifications that cannot be dismissed. Lenovo's own Help app also commits that same sin. These small, but significant, niggles take away from the soul of stock Android which is supposed to be a irritation and bloat-free free affair.
Whether the K8 Note will receive Android updates in a timely manner is a question that can only be answered with time. The previous record of Lenovo has not been great on this account. But this time Lenovo is making some commitment to provide better updates. A Lenovo representative did tell me that the K8 Note will be updated to Android O but the proof of the pudding will be in eating it. Lenovo does claim that the move to a common software platform (stock Android) will help them provide better support and efficient updates. So hopefully the K8 Note will buck the trend and receive updates on time.

Quite fast, a little hot

The K8 Note is powered by the deca-core Helio X23 processor paired with 3/4GB of RAM and the Mali T880 GPU. The smartphone comes with 32/64 GB of internal storage which can be expanded via a microSD card (of up to128GB). On paper, the smartphone comes off as a specification monster. A 10-core processor for Rs 12,999?
Well, reality is a bit more complicated than that. The smartphone is quite fast -- make no bones about that. The K8 Note is not a slow or sluggish phone by any stretch of the imagination. However, it is not faster or better in any way than other handsets running on technically "slower" Snapdragon 625 chipsets out there.
While the primary 13MP camera is above average and produces images with fair amount of detail and dynamic range, the secondary 5MP sensor is sub-standard
The K8 Note performs quite well in day to day tasks like web browsing, using social media apps, taking occasional pictures and so on but does not blitz through them like its benchmark numbers suggest -- there is the occasional lag or stutter that peeps in every now and then. When pushed, the smartphone performs admirably enough, though some minor lag is evident. Where the K8 Note disappoints is when it come to heat dissipation -- it heats even with moderate use.
Gaming performance is great though. The device handles intensive titles like Asphalt 8 and Modern Combat 5 fairly well without any frame rate drops to speak of. As expected, casual games like Subway Surfers and Candy Crush Saga are handled with aplomb.

Average battery life

Powering the K8 Note is a 4,000mAh battery, which the company claims is good for one full day of intensive use. I got quite inconsistent results from the K8 Note in terms of battery life. There were days when the smartphone died on me before I even reached home from work (between 7pm- 8pm). On the other hand, there were days when the smartphone lasted me till the night ( 12-1 AM). Whatever the case, one thing is for sure, you will not get more than one day of use out of the Lenovo K8 Note, even with moderate use.
This is decent battery life, but nothing more. In other words, it will be prudent to charge the phone at least once more in evening when you get time. In old days, this would have been good enough battery life. But nowadays we have phones that easily offer more than a day's battery life. Sadly, the K8 Note is not one of them.

Good primary camera, bad portraits

The K8 Note is the first smartphone from Lenovo to come with a dual camera setup at the back. There is a 13MP primary Pure Cel sensor mated to a secondary 5MP sensor. Both have an aperture of f/2.0 and allow for the capture of images with depth of field effects.
While the primary camera is above average and produces images with fair amount of detail and dynamic range in well-lit scenarios, the secondary sensor is sub-standard. In the 'Depth Enabled' mode, the camera really struggles to capture focus and the bokeh effect and the resultant images looks artificial and slightly tacked on.
There is a lot of blurring and loss of detail around the edges of the subject whilst taking a bokeh shot, especially in the highest f/1.2 setting. At lower settings, the bokeh effect looks decent, but not spectacular. Now, some of this blurring and focus issues are natural because when a very wide aperture (such as F1.2 or F1.4) is used these issues crop up even in proper high-end DSLR cameras. But given the fact that this phone is meant for regular users, who may not be aware of how apertures work, Lenovo should have got the software right.
It is also possible that in future updates Lenovo will fix this. May be they can remove the F1.2 portrait mode setting, so that users don't use it and expect to get razor sharp images. Or maybe they can fine tune the software in some other way. But currently the portrait mode is somewhat unusable.
The primary camera is a much better proposition. It produces good images in well lit scenarios. The shots have natural colors, good, dynamic range and are well exposed. In low-light, while the images are not as good as the Moto G5 Plus, they are quite respectable and not muddy. Noise is also controlled.
Unlike the dual camera implementation found on smartphones such as the Honor 6X, where the secondary camera helps capture better low light shots, the secondary sensor on the K8 Note provides no benefit in the daily 'Normal' mode.
On the front, there is a 13MP sensor with an aperture of f/2.2 which produces decent shots in well lit scenarios with natural colours and good detail but struggles in low light. The front sensor also has a single-LED flash which Lenovo calls 'Party Flash' which should help attract selfie fans.

Should you buy the K8 Note?

The Lenovo K8 Note is a step in the right direction for Lenovo. Ditching Vibe UI for stock Android was the best thing the company could have done. The K8 Note is a device which is built well, looks great, is fairly fast, comes with stock Android and has a pretty decent primary rear camera.
However, the bugs, heating, imperfect portrait mode and average battery life let it down somewhat. The mid-range is a very cut throat segment which has a lot of competition. With the K8 Note, Lenovo has done enough to earn a place in this high-stakes arena. But to stand on the top of the heap, the company will have to do more.
If fast performance, stock Android and great build quality are your thing, the K8 Note will make for an attractive proposition. Also, the Rs 12,999 variant offers good value for money. That is the variant you should buy. However, if are considering the Rs 13,999 model, the Moto G5 Plus offers quite a better overall experience for just a little more money.
